Balnarring Preserves

Matthew and Melissa currently oversee a charming 1885 homestead, complete with a garden and covered orchard, nestled on 9 acres in Balnarring. The property boasts a variety of features, including over 200 roses, lavender, Australian natives, 12 substantial raised vegetable beds, and more than 50 fruit trees, all cultivated without the use of pesticides.

The abundance of fruits and vegetables is not only a source of nourishment for themselves but also an opportunity to share with others.

The desire to capture the freshness and goodness of their produce year-round prompted them to explore preserving methods. They observed that certain crops, like cucumbers, yielded a surplus for a brief period, followed by months of scarcity.

Recognising the importance of traditional food preservation skills, especially in light of modern refrigeration and hectic lifestyles, Matthew and Melissa sought guidance from their mothers. During their mothers’ visits to the farm, they were taught various preserving techniques, including canning, freezing, drying, fermenting, and salting. Drawing from this valuable knowledge, they now wish to pass on their experiences and produce to others.

The preserves they create are tailored to the seasons and reflect what thrives on the farm. Adding a touch of fun, they’ve given creative names to their products, such as “Settle Down Rose Petal” for their Rose Cordial and “Sunshine in a Jar for Melbournians” for their Apricot jam. Through this venture, Matthew and Melissa aim to share not only their delectable products but also the joy and knowledge derived from their farming journey.
